A rectangular bed, covered with sand – or is it dust? Tattered books, torn pages, solid iron chains, pieces of red cloth and a sleeping person – or are they dead? The performative installation «The dust in Bed» is a metaphor for being in bed with death and life. For this project, the multidisciplinary artist and performer Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi drew inspiration from an array of sources: Healing rituals, radical resistance, domestic violence and the paradox of death. The installation challenges the journey of transformation, embracing both pain and joy, and simultaneously re-contextualising this journey as an act of protest, revolution and reclamation.
In «The dust in Bed», clinical materials, discovered artifacts, the living body, textiles, butcher’s tools and the world at large converge to create a theatrical station. The audience is treated to the experience of an alternative reality of death and healing.
