Synesthetic experience / vocal embodiment

Following her performance at the Long Night of Electronic Music 2018, the Norwegian musician and sound artist is returning to Dampfzentrale with a brand-new project.

Intimate nights spent in clubs are gradually becoming nothing more than a vague memory. «Echoic Choir» – the latest collaboration between voice artist Stine Janvin and choreographer Ula Sickle – plans to revive the ritual of night-time musical gatherings. A five-day residency at Dampfzentrale will be followed by the premiere of «Echoic Choir».

Is it even possible to revitalise the intense feeling of clubbing in the current situation? «Echoic Choir» invites you to participate – using listening skills and physical presence. An invitation to embody other and new forms of collective ritual.

The acoustic power of Stine Janvin’s voice and its spatial resonance are the foundations upon which the performance is built. The artists and the audience share the space in which sound, choreography and light merge to form a synaesthetic whole, thereby creating a collective, sensory experience. In this context, social distancing becomes an artistic parameter.

The Stavanger-born singer, performer and sound artist Stine Janvin works with the diversity of her vocal expression while focussing on ways in which it can be used to deliver a physical experience of sound.

Ula Sickle is a choreographer and performer with a background in contemporary dance. Her work is characterised by its interdisciplinary nature, especially incorporating contemporary music and visual arts. Ula Sickle lives and works in Belgium.
