LOYALTY, a ballet in three acts set to the music of the British avantgarde band Coil, fuses virtuosity and theatricality with a fervent power. For the on-stage ballet, which has remained essentially untouched for such a long time, choreographer Adam Linder seeks to employ new technical approaches and alternatives to the culturally dominant codes.
His performance takes a critical approach toward the power structures that still exist in Classical Ballet to this day. LOYALTY aims to shift the gendered and racialised constructs of this genre and metaphorically asks to which movement should the dancers remain loyal.
Choreographer Adam Linder enjoyed success as a classical ballet dancer before turning his attention to performance arts. After training at the Royal Ballet School, he danced with the Royal Ballet England, the Michael Clark Company and Meg Stuart / Damaged Goods. His works, which take a socially critical stance towards codes and systems, are presented in dance and exhibition contexts (e.g. Sadler’s Wells in London, Kampnagel Hamburg, MOMA in New York).
