In the piece “Raising Karen’s Children”, scenes are reproduced which can cause discomfort in people affected by racism, sexism, queerness or other forms of discrimination.

With stroboscopic effects

Rollstuhlfahrer*innen

Raising Karen’s Children tells stories about trust, vulnerability, pain and resentment in the lives of the so-called ‘others’. In a dance piece with spoken word elements, the group reflects on how the stereotypical image of «Karen»* can be translated into a Swiss context.
To what extent is «Karen» a symptom of our system? And how is this figure intertwined with patriarchal, racist structures of our society and public?

Through movement, Company MEK shows different realities and biographies in different stages of life. Beginning with the innocence of childhood, a sudden external event disrupts the space and reveals its impact on personal and interpersonal relationships.

*If you don’t know Karen: Karen became a meme figure of the Black Movement in the U.S., expressing stereotypical, racist behaviors of white, privileged, middle-aged women. Google it – it’s worth it. You can find a brief definition here.
