Sonata da Camera (2021) – Commissioned by Ensemble Proton Bern, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation

Canadian composer, Samuel Andreyev, resident now in France for many years, has been closely associated with «Ensemble Proton» since its founding. The ensemble has already performed thirteen of his works and recorded seven of them for CD at the studio of Radio France in Paris in 2015. What fascinates us about Andreyev’s music is, among other things, the expansion of the tonal possibilities through the use of rarely played instruments, such as the clarinet d’amore or the piccolo oboe, paired with ingeniously elaborated musical structures.

With «Sonata da Camera», Samuel Andreyev tailored a larger work to the unique Proton instrumentation in 2020. Together with other works from his oeuvre and featuring a brand new piece written especially for the concert and the subsequent CD recording, we are dedicating this programme to our composer friend. In this new composition, the regular line-up is augmented to include viola, mandolin and voice.
