Everyone who speaks Bernese German, Swiss German or any other form of German, is well acquainted with this expression. Depending on the intonation, it can make the speaker sound surprised, annoyed, compassionate, perhaps even admonishing. Equally familiar is the well-known being called forth by this word. Yet on closer inspection, the human being which this term refers to eludes a clear definition. What appears to be an established truth varies, both historically and culturally, while also manifesting itself in countless distinctly individual variations. Attempts made by the sciences to untangle this complexity, in turn, leave other facets aside. The arts – a good place to trace what being human in the world really means – also twirl around on the carousel of definitions.
As in the previous seven editions, this year’s Tanz in Bern festival also seeks to explore a theme more deeply through dance and to unpack its complexity.
