Inspired by a poem that Pier Paolo Pasolini dedicated to Antonio Gramsci, co-founder of the Italian Communist Party, Michael Turinsky seeks an answer to the general shift to the right, which is permeated by fantasies of masculinities, in the working-class milieu.

What about the dormant longing to socialise autonomously and with one’s own kind? What about the erotic, but also narcissistic undertones of comradeship and brotherhood? Building, singing, speaking, dancing, opposed to the capitalistically organised division of labour, Turinsky not only subverts the separation of mental and manual labour, but also the boundaries between choreographic intervention, concert and political agitation.

Vienna-based artist Michael Turinsky has delighted Dampfzentrale audiences before. With his latest performance, which focuses on the resistant materiality of the body, he is guaranteed to enthral us once again.

The texts for this year’s Tanz in Bern draw from two sources: firstly, what the artists themselves write about their productions, and secondly, how these productions relate to the festival theme pleasurable.
