The US choreographer Trajal Harrell is considered one of the most influential innovators of contemporary dance. With his piece «A Ghost Ballet», he has returned, after major stage productions, to a more open and experimental way of working. Inspired by Tatsumi Hijikata, the Japanese co-founder of butoh, the work unfolds as an evening between rehearsal and performance, research and presentation – shaped by encounters, risks and the creative moment of the unforeseen.

Dampfzentrale: Trajal Harrell’s art triggers a place within us for which there are hardly any words. On stage, he radiates an irresistible and deeply moving presence – proud and vulnerable, elegant and wilful. Drawing on diverse dance forms, from voguing to butoh and contemporary dance, Trajal creates a language in which past and present, intimacy and dance history merge. Those who experience his work start to see humans differently. And yes, his performances sometimes move audiences to tears.

The texts for this year’s Tanz in Bern draw from two sources: firstly, what the artists themselves write about their productions, and secondly, why each performance was curated for the festival with the theme of «Mensch!».
