Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s «The Scarlet Letter», a choreographic drama unfolds. In their three-act interpretation, Trajal Harrell and the dancers of Zürich Dance Ensemble trace the courage of the novel’s heroine. At the start, the dancers encourage the audience to read about the original story on their phones. «Tambourines» is a choreographic experimentation that explores the historical motifs of American puritanism. This work also reflects Harrell’s unique choreographic style. A succession of costume changes, a voguing-inspired runway and the dancers’ demonstration of performative expressions blend to create an emotionally charged and fulfilling dance evening, infused with pop-like emancipation and subversive charm.
