Robert Walser’s death, seen for once from an unusual, namely Iranian perspective: the composer Ali Latif-Shushtari discovers new levels in his microgrammes.
Something seemingly familiar appears here in a new way. The poet Robert Walser (1878-1956), perhaps the most frequently written author in recent Swiss music history, is read from an unusual perspective: The project initiator and composer Ali Latif-Shushtari comes from Iran, but studied composition in Bern. He was particularly fascinated by Walser’s highly enigmatic manuscripts, which are written over in a fine, pencil-like calligraphic script. Those initially indecipherable micrograms inspired him – especially the enormous variety of forms that Walser sometimes placed on a single page, as well as the graphic design. From this – and impressed by Walser’s walks and his death – Latif-Shushtari developed a multidimensional dramaturgy for a singer and ensemble in which the boundaries between reality and fiction become blurred.
