The starting point for this work, originally conceived as a performance and as an exhibition, is the death of Cohen,s life partner Elu. A stroke of fate in the artist’s life unfolds into a beautiful requiem for all those who have lost a loved one.
Cohen, a fairy-like being, holds a performative ceremony on the stage covered with ballet shoes. The footwear and its use is the connecting element between other exhibits and performer. Like a sculptor, Cohen uses various artistic means such as performance, exhibits, and video to chisel out a monument that exists as a symbol of love beyond death. The created monument celebrates art that celebrates life.
Steven Cohen was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1962. He lives and works in France. As a visual artist and performer, he is a welcome guest at internationally renowned festivals. His works go beyond mere provocation and often leave viewers deeply moved. He already performed at Dampfzentrale Bern in 2011.
