The derogative title «Miss» experiences an ambivalent self-empowerment at Philippine trans-gender beauty pageants. These pageants have become platforms for the LGBTQIA* community to showcase their bodies in line with Western beauty standards. This is, however, fraught with problems, as the pageants transform trans people into a spectacle for the entertainment of the general public.
In «Miss», Joshua Serafin casts a critical eye on the particularities of the aesthetics, structure and discourses of Philippine beauty pageants and raises critical questions about the global politics of beauty standards. «Miss» is a deeply honest exploration of what it means to be a woman*.
