«The thought of the tremor characterizes the approach of this inextricable world.» –Édouard Glissant, Aesthetics I

If I’m trembling, the world is trembling. If the world is trembling, you’re trembling too. What are the political and metaphysical implications of a trembling body in a trembling world? What resonant possibilities does the tremor produce?

Diagnosed with a condition that causes her hands to visibly shake, Sylvie Robinson exploits her condition as a choreographic device and mode of organization—negotiating ideas of disturbance, structural failure, and the inextricability of our material and political worlds. Layering dance, speech, and live drum compositions from the musician and composer Akram Hajj, the performance moves towards a reconciliation between the artist’s body, the audience, and all that demands to be trembled over. After all, there is so much to tremble for.

Dampfzentrale: The emerging choreographic voice and member of the Performing for Palestine collective, Sylvie Robinson, draws on the personal, experience of a trembling body. We’re impressed. Established and driven by the live percussion on stage, Sylvie creates both a sensual approach to and a political perspective on the vulnerability of humans in a world that itself increasingly trembles. Her performance therefore makes the relationship between the individual body and its environment not only visible but truly tangible.

The texts for this year’s Tanz in Bern draw from two sources: firstly, what the artists themselves write about their productions, and secondly, why each performance was curated for the festival with the theme of «Mensch!».
