Art is precious. Dancing is even more so, as each movement irretrievably vanishes at the very moment in which it is born. What would be more suitable than dance to reflect our transience in poetic ways? The Basel choreographer Tabea Martin has dedicated an entire trilogy to this topic: Following «This is my last dance» (2018) and «Forever» (2019) she now concludes it in a co-production with the Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps and the organisers’ network Expédition Suisse. «Nothing Left» examines the impact that the death of others has on us. While for the dying, a process ends with death, those who are left behind are faced with a new and troubled beginning. Those who have died no longer respond: dialogue becomes a monologue. Deaths caused by war or disaster are equally distressing. Can we simply continue to live? We are helpless when faced with a phenomenon which is an invariable fact of our existence. Ignoring the usual taboos, Tabea Martin takes a close look, resists the moment and questions it. Dance opens up a new level of communication for the inexpressible. «Maybe it will become a big party», says Tabea Martin and she is dead serious. Anyone who knows this artist also knows that onstage one must be prepared for everything, in the best sense.
