The new Dampfzentrale series brings authors together with artists on stage. Authors read from their books, artists relate, respond or react to the work.

These readings are different – they are performative and include poetry, music or dance. Each evening harbours something special. «Seite an Seite» creates a space for moving encounters between literature and art, author and performer, the audience and the stage guests.

In dieser zweiten Ausgabe fragen wir zusammen mit Franziska Schutzbach nach Perspektiven der weiblichen Verbundenheit.

«Revolution der Verbundenheit» will be published by Droemer Verlag at the end of September 2024.

Moderation: Fabienne Amlinger and Anneli Binder

Revolution of solidarity: How female solidarity is changing society

«We still have to achieve great freedom together.» Bettina von Arnim wrote this to her friend Karoline von Günderode. Many years have passed since then and the emancipation of women has progressed – especially when women relate to each other. This book sets out in search of strong and nurturing female relationships, of love and friendship among women, of political sisterhood and solidarity, of emancipatory mother-daughter relationships and female family genealogies.

Using numerous captivating examples from the past and present, sociologist and non-fiction author Franziska Schutzbach shows how women have made revolutions possible through their relationships despite division and difference. How they loosened patriarchal structures in everyday life and politics because they allied and befriended each other. She describes what is possible when women orientate themselves towards other women.

But she also shows how difficult this is. Because the division of women is one of the foundations of patriarchal power. Women should orientate themselves towards men, not towards each other. They are supposed to align themselves with sexist standards and male favour. They should co-operate with oppressive systems instead of rebelling against them together. Unity and harmony are not a matter of course among women, there are rifts and differences, we find discord, lack of solidarity and exercise of power. And a great lack of time. The book also gets to the bottom of these challenges. Franziska Schutzbach uses essays and letters in this book to make a revolution in solidarity tangible as a concrete and personal practice.

A passionate plea for empowering, encouraging female relationships.
