As instrumentalists, we demonstrate great virtuosity and flexibility. This sometimes also means putting aside our own instruments and applying the instrumental skills we have learned to other things: everyday objects, for example! Sound generators can be found everywhere: at home, on the street, in the hardware store, in the toy shop…

For Protonwerk No. 10 we actually lay down our instruments to take objets trouvés into our hands (or feet). We want to commission works for found objects in the tradition of many composers who sought the unpredictable, the theatrical, the noisy or the everyday. We have commissioned 5 composers to write a work for the full 8-person Ensemble Proton Bern, however no one of the ensemble plays their instrument, instead they exclusively play Objets trouvés.

Protonwerk is the platform for contemporary music created by Ensemble Proton Bern. The support for young composers in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia enters its tenth year this year and is aimed at composers who are at the beginning of their professional careers. Interested artists can apply to receive a commissioned composition for one of the annual Protonwerk concerts.
