What limits does a white majority society impose on Black men? And what spaces open up when they shed the burden of foreign attributions and define themselves in their own language?
PERCEPTIONS, the new piece by Anna Chiedza Spörri, traces the gaze of society that shapes and distorts the image of Black men in Switzerland. From the perspective of Black men, it addresses the question of how these external images seep into their inner selves, interweave with their own ideas, and shape their self-image. Between limitation and liberation, between expectations and lived realities, four dancers use dance and spoken word to portray their experiences with racism in a white majority society. With powerful, vulnerable, and resistant movements, they invite and challenge the audience to question their own perceptions of Black men.
