Mary Ocher + Your Government

Mary Ocher is the undisputed “queen outsider of Berlin avant-pop”. With a little help from King Khan, the “cosmopolitan and feminist Bohemienne” (Spex) started recording music and playing live a few years ago, mostly with her two-person backing band Your Government. The singer, musician, composer, and filmmaker of Russian descent counts not only Die Goldenen Zitronen, but also the writer Sibylle Berg among her fans. Her current album is called “The West Against The People” and deals with various political points of view that are close to her heart – “Nationalism is my personal arch-enemy”, as she told a journalist. She now performs her wild mixture of rapturous, electronically enriched pop, weird entertainment, futuristic rock’n’roll, driving Krautrock, and explosive visuals in Bern. Felix Kubin, also a welcome guest at the Dampfzentrale, describes Ocher as follows: “Mary is a pinball in hyperspace. It’s pure, martial and arousing, like an army of rattling skeletons. She needs two drummers to keep up with her Venusian energy.”

Omni Selassi

Coincidence was on our side when we noticed that the supporting band we wanted for the evening has the same line-up as Mary Ocher + Your Government: Omni Selassi also consists of three people, from Bern and Leipzig, and the two men in the band likewise each sit at a drum kit. The singer and multi-instrumentalist Rea Dubach (who recently performed solo as REA at our season opening) has joined forces with drummers Mirko Verduno (drums, harp) and Lukas Rutzen (drums, synthesizer) to create Omni Selassi, probably her grooviest and most rock project to date.
