The Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues is a leading voice of contemporary dance in Latin America. For more than two decades, she has been combining her artistic work with social responsibility in the favela of Maré in Rio de Janeiro. In «Borda» – Portuguese for border, edge and barrier – Lia reconceptualises boundaries: As dividing lines, transitional elements and places of encounter. Using human bodies, all kinds of fabric and movement, she creates a poetic tapestry on stage, woven somewhere between reality and imagination.
| Dampfzentrale: Very few artists succeed as convincingly as Lia Rodrigues does in transforming vulnerability into such a powerful source of vitality. «Borda» moves audiences, as the amazing dancers, through their movements and with graceful textiles, continually form new groups within a unique stage aesthetic – fragile and contradictory yet filled with beauty. You leave the theatre with the conviction that coexistence is not an ideal to be attained, but something we must continually shape and recreate. |
The texts for this year’s Tanz in Bern draw from two sources: firstly, what the artists themselves write about their productions, and secondly, why each performance was curated for the festival with the theme of «Mensch!».
