Roaming through the forest, through the branches, like a wolf, through the deep green meadows. A slight bleed in the heart. The so-called Sunday afternoon, everything crystallised. Everything crystallises. Last night’s full moonlight, still dripping under the skin: shedding snakeskin. Simple: move, jump. Gently – the descent very carefully. If you know you want it, then you want it. Henry Thomet from Café Mokka in Thun opens the extended edition of lazy club.
222Rn or the union of doom by the two trios Radon and Film 2. Nothing stands alone in this cluster of distortion: two drums, two basses and two guitars are crowned by a choir of screams and howls. With Arch Angelica, the formation can now also be experienced on tape. At the lazy club, 222Rn perform as 221Rn – the five of them, without instruments, but with 5 x music on the USB or similar.
Donya Speaks is a dance and theatre maker from Bern and Tunis. She sees the stage as a space of possibility and theatre as a means of creating a dialogue. With this in mind, Donya shares pieces of music from her archive of piece developments from the last three years on the lazy club stage – memories of the sound colours of the places where she has worked and lived: إِلَى آخِرِ الْمَطَ (Engl. «until the end of the rain»), a poetic dance performance, co-produced by Tanzhaus Bern and Théâtre de l’Opéra Tunis, and the transnational and feminist piece «POETiK P – pluriverse of pussybilities» premiered at Dampfzentrale Bern in 2024.
With a conspicuous affection for pigeons, Maxi is active in the visual arts, but is also associated with music (including Prix Garanti) and curatorial work: Maxi is some things, but also some things not – or in their own words: «Maxi is not a dj, neither a singer, but will sing and dj for you. is this all a big pigeon joke and maxi just some smoke☁️?? Or is this going to be so spectacular/striking that there will be some new kind of existence/make-up of dj’s and singers? lets judge this dramatic debut//::lets forget:::lets tune in/out/on….lets fly. see u»
CRTTR is a collective based in Bern that reinterprets traditional spaces and cultural concepts with a wide variety of events. The collective feels at home between drone, ambient, avant-garde and club experiments and organises events with enthusiasm – preferably in the Dampfzentrale, of course :). The possibilities are far from being exhausted. Who will turn up at lazy club remains a mystery for the time being – maybe all of them, maybe just two. Let’s see.
Tapiwa Svosve is a saxophonist, electro-acoustic musician and lecturer from Zurich. With the BAK Swiss Music Prize in his luggage, he is constantly exploring the potential of and between jazz and the underground – whether solo or in groups such as District Five, Zimmermann – Svosve – Grab, in a trio with Asma Aroof and Patrick Belaga, and and and and…
KUMARI weaves strands from a wide variety of genres into a booming blanket that may sometimes scratch, sometimes be heavy or almost flutter away, but always provides a lot of warmth. KUMARI aka your local brown babe aka Priya Kumar is a DJ, musician and musical director of Radio 3FACH from Lucerne.
After her concert on 18 April, where aya will be presenting her latest album hexed! on Hyperdub, the Manchester experimental icon will be staying in Bern for a while to play a DJ set at the lazy club. aya is a queen of mixing genres and moods and is known for always moderating her sets with speeches and comments. One person once commented under aya’s Boiler Room set: «an aya without a mic is like an angel without wings».
Tamriko Kordzaia is a musician, lecturer (ZHDK) and curator (Closed Encounters, Musikfesival Bern). She had already made a name for herself in her native Georgia as an interpreter of Haydn and Mozart. However, her involvement with contemporary music extends far beyond the field of new music, and she frequently collaborates with musicians from electronic club music, experimental music and jazz-related contexts. She also seeks connections to other artistic disciplines and fields. From 2008 to 2023, she was a member of the Mondrian Ensemble, with which she received the Swiss Music Prize in 2018. With her latest formation, Ensemble Kiosk, she was awarded Zurich’s Werkjahr in 2023.
royalbrut would probably be the underground duo from the big city if Bern were a big city. The sounds and aspirations are extra juicy, while the attitude and the Prosecco are dryer than extra dry. All «awake for nothing», but still awake. royalbrut are Eglė Salkauskyte (aka skyte) and Till hillbrecht (aka Trillion Tapeman), releasing their debut EP on Traverse in March and ringing the bells over to 4/21 at lazy club.
Rolf Laureijs aka Frederik aka ½ of a=f/m (and all that among other things) is a sound artist, songwriter and performer from Willisau, based in Zurich. Rolf studied Sound Arts at HKB in Bern and has been composing music for theatre plays and performances ever since. In this, as in all his music projects, Rolf’s keen sense for aesthetic, subtle and, at the same time, in-depth melodies and moods is evident time and again. His set at lazy club will certainly be no exception in this respect.
Like aya, Rainy Miller from Preston near Manchester will also be playing at Dampfzentrale on 18 April, performing the live show for his forthcoming album Joseph, What Have You Done. Those who have experienced Rainy Miller at Full Of Lava 2023 know that the musician and performer likes to skilfully venture into the depths of his inner self and turn them outwards in his work. In doing so, he always manages to combine the brute with the sensual. In addition to his musical creations, Rainy Miller is also a highly talented DJ and we have the feeling that the lazy club set up is a perfect match for his selections.
Apinti and THY are both artists and DJs who played a set together for Apinti’s programme «tenderness» on Radio Bollwerk with probably the most beautiful balancing act between sweet and distorted – and if you know lazy club… you know. So that’s how the idea of inviting them both together came about. Apinti & THY write about their set: conversations around yellow boots and touchpoints at a Snitch’s concert, like a pendulum swaying between fieldrecordings and mellow r’n’b music, we once again come together in tenderness, listening into each other and ourselves.
On Soundcloud it says: — – interweaving spatiotemporal tissue with variable degrees of density + intensity — –
and Saskia Winkelmann once said: twoorchids is wind whispering poetry in your ear, gust, storm + the calm before it. twoorchids is constantly changing, but never lets you fall. with roots deep in the earth + sand in your hair.
it all fits too well not to just simply copy it.
twoorchids blows out our candles in this edition, the wicks and hearts glowing long after.
