Jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz, who will receive the Swiss Grand Prix Music 2023, takes us with his band to the classics of film music.

Perhaps film music melodies are the standards of today. In any case, several of them have eaten their way into our musical memory, such as those by Nino Rota or Ennio Morricone. For a trumpeter like Erik Truffaz, the title melody from Fellini’s «La Strada» must have iconic significance. Asked to decompose film music, he transformed this heavy tragic circus song into a lullaby.

From there, the concert programme «Rollin» developed with music by Michel Magne, Philippe Sarde or Alain Romans, for example. We will occasionally still recognise figures like Marilyn Monroe, Zampanò or Jacques Tati on the inner screen, but Erik Truffaz’s band also frees these songs from their original function at the same time. «They are no longer scores that serve the image, but miniature films themselves, full of stories and outrageous adventures.»
