The French-Austrian choreographer Gisèle Vienne combines choreographic precision with cinematic visual storytelling and psychological depth to create a distinctive and unmistakable visual language. In «Crowd», she transforms a rave into a hypnotic landscape of emotions. Fifteen dancers move between ecstasy and paralysis, desire and violence, intimacy and loneliness. Unfolding in extreme slow motion, the work exposes an intense panorama of human relationships and collective experiences.
| Dampfzentrale: «Crowd» is part of this year’s festival programme because few other performances demonstrate so emphatically how people transform one another, what collective dynamics are capable of and how a group is always more than the sum of its individual members. Between longing and loneliness, intoxication and violence, a force emerges that lets the audience wrestle with the contradictions of being human. Gisèle Vienne creates images that stay with the viewers long after the performance has finished – unsettling, moving and with an intensity from which no one can escape. |
The texts for this year’s Tanz in Bern draw from two sources: firstly, what the artists themselves write about their productions, and secondly, why each performance was curated for the festival with the theme of «Mensch!».
