In «Épique! (pour Yikakou)», Ivorian choreographer Nadia Beugré takes us to the village of her ancestors, to the village of her childhood: Yikakou. A village that no longer exists. The land, which was considered cursed, is now covered in forest – fertile ground for myths and longing. At the centre of the journey is Gbahihonon, «the woman who says what she sees». A seer, a protector, a woman of great knowledge and unwavering presence. Other spirits of powerful women permeate this performance, including Dô-Kamissa, an ageing woman who, in the Sundiata epic, transformed herself into a buffalo after being injured by her brother in order to destroy her land.
| Three women trace the lives of the women who came before them. Beugré, Dali and Diabate do this in a sensual and captivating way. With musical wit and powerful performances, an pleasurable evening of togetherness unfolds. |
The texts for this year’s Tanz in Bern draw from two sources: firstly, what the artists themselves write about their productions, and secondly, how these productions relate to the festival theme pleasurable.
