Together with several guest artists, Ensemble Proton is developing a scenic concert that will present a new version of Gustav Mahler’s «Das Lied von der Erde». Mahler’s unofficial 9th Symphony is a composition full of power, imagination and artistry. But whose song is actually being played here? Who is singing about whose earth? The project confronts the exoticism of the work with the polyphony of four authors: The composer-performer Leo Hofmann, the director and performer Sasha Amaya, the composer Yiran Zhao and the proton clarinettist Richard Haynes arrange and rewrite Mahler’s six songs of the earth, thus expanding the work with new facets, comments and perspectives.
“Leo Hofmann explores music as a digital yet physical practice. Sasha Amaya works between historical and contemporary techniques of dance and music to reshape the relationship between politics, aesthetics and potentials. Yiran Zhao uses all kinds of materials in her compositional work.”
Based on Gustav Mahler’s «Das Lied von der Erde». A scenic concert designed by Leo Hofmann and Ensemble Proton Bern. With work processing by Leo Hofmann, Yiran Zhao and Richard Haynes.
