Even a single mother who drives a bus can become a millionaire. At least, that’s what the much-vaunted myth of rising from rags to riches would have us believe. In her book «Vom Tellerwäscher zum Tellerwäscher», journalist Ciani-Sophia Hoeder shows that social advancement is far from easy – and that the myth of the dishwasher’s career in particular reveals the intertwining of various forms of discrimination such as classism, racism and sexism.

In her latest book, which is being published these days under the title «Ökorassismus. Wie Weisse unsere Welt zerstören», she again tackles the intertwining of various forms of discrimination. Whether a person lives next to a landfill or in the countryside, indigenous communities are dispossessed in favor of Western consumption, or entire groups of people are displaced by «green gentrification» – none of this is a coincidence, but rather an expression of «eco-racism» for Hoeder.

Barbara Bleisch talks to Ciani-Sophia Hoeder about classism and racism and how discrimination continues in the climate crisis.Barbara Bleisch talks to Ciani-Sophia Hoeder about classism and racism and how discrimination continues in the climate crisis.

«Honest, open dialogue has become precarious,» says the well-known philosopher Barbara Bleisch. After three successful years, the intensive discussions with inspiring personalities on topics that drive society are entering their next edition. Once again, the stage belongs to Barbara Bleisch four times a year. Each time, she meets an inspiring personality of her choice from the worlds of culture, politics, art and science to discuss current affairs. In 90-minute conversations, uncomfortable topics are addressed and questions are brought to a close – fabulously, honestly and without spectacle.
